Overview : The migration landscape in Latin America and the Caribbean has changed rapidly over the last decade, representing important challenges for the governments of the Region. In 2019, the number of international migrants reached 272 million worldwide, of which 43 million are nationals of a Latin American country. Immigration has also been increasing. Most of the change is due to the Venezuelan migration crisis. Since 2015 an estimated 5.5 million Venezuelans have left their country and about 85% of them have moved to another country in the Region. The rapid increase in the number of people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean and the measures adopted to combat the contagion have contributed to increasing the vulnerability of the international migrant population in the region.
