This PIN is to advise interetsed parties that Waterways Ireland have a requirement for contructional amrine garde timer for use on the Lower Bann waterway which will be delivered to a Waterways Ireland operational facility at Kilrea, County Derry, Northern Ireland.

In brief the requirement is for the supply and delivery of constructional timber for use in a marine environment, principally for lock gate manufacture. Two types are required.

1) Hardwood for frame construction of lock gates. The hardwood timber must

• be durable enough to endure a marine environment for at least 25 years;

• free from large penetrating cracks;

• must be within + or - 3mm tolerance;

• have an average density not less than 1000 kg per cubic metre; and

• meet strength grade D70, as defined in BS 5268 part 2, or equivalent.

2) Softwood for sheeting boards to lock gates. The softwood must:

• be durable enough to endure a marine environment for at least 10 years;

• free from large penetrating cracks;

• must be within + or - 3mm tolerance;

• have an average density not less than 460 kg per cubic metre; and

• meet strength grade C30 or greater, as defined in BS 5268 part 2, or equivalent.

The timber sections being purchased will be put in to storage and used on an ‘as required’ basis to affect repairs and/or replace hardwood structures on the navigable waterways under our remit. Suitable storage requirements should be highlighted in submission of tender.
