SECURING UGANDA’S NATURAL RESOURCE BASE IN PROTECTED AREAS   UGANDA WILDLIFE AUTHORITY (UWA) GRANT NO. PROJECT ID NO: (P174337) Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) received funding from the World Bank, with financing from the Sweden International Development Association, in the amount of US$:1.3Million for implementation of the Securing Uganda’s Natural Resource Base in Protected Areas Project in and around Queen Elizabeth National Park, Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve and Murchison Falls Protected Area. The objective of this project is to improve sustainable management of, and increase benefits to communities from, target protected areas in response to COVID-19 impacts and it intends to apply part of the proceeds to payments for goods, works, non-consulting services and consulting services to be procured under this project.  The project will support participatory forest protection, forest monitoring, and forest restoration activities, including prevention and management of wildfire and human wildlife conflict. Working with Collaborative Resource Management groups (CRM), this project will also invest in community livelihoods and ecotourism activities, with focus on value chains and employment skills that are marketable and adaptable. Notable among key areas the project will support include: Undertake innovative approaches with local communities to prevent/mitigate human-wildlife conflicts Support at least two problem animal hotspot subcounties around each of the three PAs to develop and implement land use plans Support community Resource Management groups with alternative wood and nutritional requirements Promote value addition on products associated with conservation Support existing community ecotourism groups around MFNP, QENP, TSWR, and along major tourism roads in the region Provide incentives for at least three community groups/individuals/Clans in Bunyoro & Toro regions who conserve habitats for Chimpanzees & other endangered wildlife Support existing private conservation-livelihood model initiatives along the Murchison-Queen tourism road Support the youths around MFNP, QENP, TSWR and wildlife hotspot region of Kagadi in job skilling activities to reduce redundant labour that would engage in poaching Procurement of contracts financed under this project in accordance with the stipulated procedures will be open to all eligible firms and individuals. Specific Procurement Notices for contracts through a competitive procurement process will be announced, as they become available. These will be placed both online at institutional websites including World Bank but also in the New Vision and Daily Monitor Newspapers print media in Uganda.
