The emergence of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2016 marked a new global ambition and roadmap for rapid and sustained poverty reduction and advancement of human wellbeing worldwide. As such, the attainment of the goals requires concerted efforts from different stakeholders from local, national and global levels. Notably, since the enactment of the SDGs, the international development community has been increasingly supporting (through technical and financial aid) country-level initiatives that advance the attainment of the goals before 2030. As we progress towards agenda 2030, it is becoming increasingly evident that local participation is not only beneficial for evidence-based policy formulation but relevant for sustainable development in all its dimensions – social, economic, political and environmental.
Against this backdrop, the UNDP Accelerator Lab The Gambia (AcclabGM) aims to undertake a three-month robotics program project to educate primary and junior school age children i.e. 6-14 years old in hard skills and robotics in particular as a way to promote SDGs 4 and 9. This educational campaign will be in the form of technology and software trainings, group work and projects to promote peer to peer learning, and finally competition. The aims of this project are to promote a form of emerging technologies amongst Gambian youth and to test whether we can equip them with 21st century relevant youth to make them more competitive in general and internationally.
