The overall objective of this project is to investigate and raise awareness of the prevalence of dual quality and misleading branding strategies on the Nordic market. Whether relating to the advertised contents and efficiency of a product or its purported environmental impact, consumers have a right to expect products to fulfil the same level of quality irrespective of in which member state that product is purchased. The Nordic consumer markets share many similarities, both in regard to the emphasis on environmental considerations as well as the attitudes and expectations of consumers. Therefore, one would not expect the markets to exhibit many instances of dual quality. Differences in the ingredients of laundry detergents have however been shown, calling for a more thorough investigation into the wider category of household chemicals. To evaluate the prevalence of dual quality on the Nordic market, the project participants will conduct tests on 162 household chemicals. Not only will the products be sent to test labs for content analysis, but the branding strategies and information provided on the packaging will also be analysed and compared. The results will be disseminated through consumer magazine articles, social media, press releases and a project report, reaching a total of 450 000 people. Although the participating organisations already enjoy a good working relationship, cooperative projects are few and far between. The project is therefore designed to, apart from generating valuable data, also provide opportunities for the exchange of best practices and the exploration of new ways for cooperation to be initiated and maintained. The internal evaluation meetings and the project report will improve conditions for future collaborations between participants. Consumers, enforcement agencies and public officials will gain an increased understanding of dual quality, environmental claims and allergens in relation to household chemical products.
