Roma are among the most disadvantaged groups in the EU, experiencing barriers to education including poverty, racism and discrimination at all levels. The EU Commission asserts that discrimination, fed by pressure, harassment and bullying in schools can act as serious deterrents to Roma parents sending their children to school. Effective protection against these behaviours is key to combating this discrimination and encouraging inclusion in schools and the wider community. However, this is hampered by the continued absence of data on Roma, especially in regards to bullying. Without proper scientific research on the experiences of Roma children and school attitudes towards them no effective inclusion strategies can be developed. BReAthe’s prime objective is to address this research gap to the extent necessary to meet the aims of the ground up strategy for inclusion proposed by the Commission. To do this we will work with the Roma community and its advocates in two EU countries to co-operatively create new, effective research measures. These will assess the prevalence and impact of bullying amongst Roma children and their experiences with school staff, while examining gender and how it might influence bullying/inclusion. Attitudes to/experiences of Roma children among educational staff, and what inclusiveness methods their schools employ will also be explored. This will be done with a view to the creation of a cross-national policy advisory document and outline for a training module for Roma inclusiveness in schools to be implemented beyond the life of the project. Activities and outcomes which will address the research gap and provide policy/practical guides to enhance the inclusiveness of schools. They will also advance collaboration between stakeholders (e.g. Roma, NGOs, school communities, academia), with an aim of building cross-community capacity, to holistically towards integration, reducing bullying and enhancing the well-being of Roma students.
