In 2016, UNICEF conducted a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice (KAP) Study on the topic of children with disabilities (CwD) in Malaysia. The Study took place across four states (Selangor, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak) with the aim to expand national understanding of community perceptions of disability, and provide an evidence base to inform communication for behaviour and social change that could addresses the root causes of stigma and discrimination as experienced by CwD and their families.
The research is now complete and by May 2017 the findings/recommendations report will be fully designed and printed, ready for dissemination. The key findings of the Study highlight that knowledge of causes, available services and appropriate responses is low, attitudes are largely negative and practices exclude CwD in Malaysia. UNICEF Malaysia’s current message to the general public in events aims to 1) create visibility 2) increase positive attitudes and 3) encourage inclusion for CwD in Malaysia. As such the overarching slogans that UNICEF Malaysia is working with are: All different – All able – All in; disability isn’t inability; and #thisability.
A launch event is required to disseminate the KAP Study Report to key stakeholders such as government officials, corporates, non-governmental organisations, children with disabilities and their families, and disability activists. The launch of the KAP Study is not only a critical tool in raising awareness of the findings and recommendations, it also serves to promote UNICEF’s inclusion messages and encourage key stakeholders to address both attitudinal and physical barriers to inclusion within Malaysia.
The Launch will take the form of: a market place, which displays examples of inclusion good practice and disability assistive devices made by members of the disability community; keynote speeches, which introduce the key findings and UNICEF’s disability messages; airing disability/inclusion videos; and will close with a networking lunch.
